Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community @brendan23. It's great to have you join us and many thanks for your question.
I'm sorry to hear you are having issues installing your new flyscreen.
I believe this issue has to do with the thickness of the spline that is being used or the screen being stretched too tightly. Splines come in a variety of thickness including 4.5mm, 5.0mm, 5.7mm and 6.0mm. If you are installing new spline then you will need to measure the gap on the frame. For fibreglass or aluminium screen you would normally select a spline that is the same width as the gap on the frame. If you already have a spline that is the same width as the gap and the aluminium screen is ripping, I would suggest going one size smaller with the spline.
At what point does it start to tear? At any time you push the spline in or only when the screen is under tension and you are almost complete?

1. Mesh Material
Fly screen meshes are typically made from materials such as fiberglass, aluminum, stainless steel, Epoxy Coated and polyester. Each material has its own set of advantages. Fiberglass is cost-effective and allows for good airflow, while stainless steel offers durability and resistance to corrosion. Consider your specific needs and budget when choosing the material. When we compare epoxy to other mesh material, Epoxy meshes perform way better and Last longer.
2. Mesh Size
The size of the wire mesh openings is crucial in determining the level of protection. Smaller mesh sizes are effective at keeping out tiny insects like mosquitoes, while larger meshes are suitable for areas with fewer pests. Ensure that the mesh size aligns with the types of insects you want to keep out.
3. Mesh Opening
Mesh density or Mesh Opening refers to the number of openings per square inch. Higher mesh density provides better protection against smaller insects. For optimal performance, choose a mesh with a high density for areas prone to pests.
4. Durability
Fly screen meshes are exposed to various weather conditions. It's important to select a mesh that can withstand harsh elements without deteriorating. Stainless steel and aluminum meshes are known for their durability and longevity.
5. UV Resistance
UV resistance is essential if your fly screen mesh will be exposed to direct sunlight. UV-resistant meshes can withstand prolonged sun exposure without fading or weakening.
6. Easy Maintenance
Consider how easy it is to clean and maintain the chosen mesh. Some meshes are easier to clean than others, making them a more practical choice for long-term use.
7. Budget
Set a budget for your fly screen mesh project. While quality is crucial, there are options available to suit various budgets. Make sure to strike a balance between cost and quality.
8. Installation Method
Different fly screen meshes may require different installation methods. Some can be easily installed as a DIY project, while others may require professional installation. Factor in the installation process when making your decision.
9. Aesthetic Appeal
If aesthetics are important to you, consider the design and color options available for fly screen meshes. Choose one that complements the style of your home.
Conclusion
Selecting the right fly screen mesh for your home involves careful consideration of various factors, including mesh material, size, density, durability, UV resistance, maintenance, budget, installation method, and aesthetic appeal. By choosing the perfect fly screen mesh, you can enjoy a pest-free and well-ventilated home without compromising on style. Make an informed decision based on your unique requirements, and you'll have a fly screen mesh that enhances your quality of life.
