I believe it is the plastic strips that have the most surface area in a wet-dry filter, especially today with so many different designs in bio balls. The big advantage is to have high O2 levels so bacteria can thrive. I have been pumping a lot of air into my snorkel tube in the bog for two years now to ensure that bacteria in my 6-foot deep bog do not suffocate due to using up all the O2.

Ceramic is also impervious and will not biodegrade. Bacteria can grow on any surface, including ceramic. Lava rock will affect pH, but ceramic does not. Plastic strips may provide the most surface area in wet-dry filters, especially with the numerous designs of bio balls available today. The key advantage is the high oxygen levels, which support bacterial growth.
