Characteristics
The DIN 1.2311 steel, also known as plastic mould steel, is produced in Germany and renowned for its excellent properties. This steel undergoes a super clean production process, ensuring pre-hardening and resulting in a micro-pure homogenized structure. It displays exceptional polishing and light etching engraving capabilities. Post-heat treatment, it exhibits good processing and polishing performance, making it suitable for chrome surface treatments. Its microstructure primarily consists of martensite and bainite.
The steel offers a hardness in the quench and temper condition ranging from 280-325 HB (29-34 HRC), providing high strength and minimal risk of dimensional distortion after quenching. It is especially suitable for plastic moulds with a thickness of less than 400 mm and is ideal for applications requiring a fine polish or surface texturing.

Round bars are available in sizes ranging from 19 mm to 220 mm, while flat sections are offered from 12 mm to 250 mm.

Mechanical Properties
Heat Treatment Data
Forging
Heat slowly to 930°C, maintaining the temperature to ensure even heating. Proceed with forging and allow for gradual cooling afterwards.
Annealing
Heat to 775°C to 790°C, soaking for sufficient time to ensure thorough heating, followed by cooling in a heat treatment furnace.
Quenching
Heat to 820°C to 840°C and quench in oil.
Tempering
Evenly heat to the desired tempering temperature for the steel. Maintain temperature for a sufficient time before cooling in air. Recommended tempering temperature ranges from 100°C to 600°C.
Processing
Round bars and flat sections can be precisely cut to the required sizes, and ground stock or gauge plates are available in both standard and custom sizes.
Applications
This steel is widely used in the manufacturing of alloy die-casting moulds, hot-pressing molds, various hot forging dies, metal extrusion dies, and die sets.
